This is going to be confusing for longtime fans.

So much of the discourse around Blue Bloods has been the fact that it’s coming to an end. The police drama will be wrapping up after fourteen beloved seasons on CBS. That being said, another season of Blue Bloods is going into production via the Paramount-owned studio Awesomeness.

Confusing? We thought so too. CBS would never dare give up a property as valuable as Blue Bloods. Especially since there have been talks of launching a spinoff or a continuation under a different title. So what gives? Well, evidently, the Awesomeness Blue Bloods is also set in New York, and deals with a large, complicated family.

Blue Bloods will be based on a YA book series

The biggest difference between the Blue Bloods shows is that one deals with cops, while the other will deal with vampires. Yes, the Awesomeness Blue Bloods really emphasizes the blood in its title. Based on the YA book series by Melissa de la Cruz, Blue Bloods is evidently about a clan of undead vampires who pull the strings of modern society.

The official website description for the book series, and presumably, the upcoming show, reads:

“Within New York City’s most elite families, there lurks a secret society of celebrated Americans whose ancestors sailed on the Mayflower. They are the powerful and the wealthy — and in fact, they are not human.”

CBS is still planning a Blue Bloods spinoff

So there you have it. Fans will be getting more Blue Bloods, just not in the way they envisioned. The show may very well be a smash, but it’s hard to deny that there will be some difficulty in sharing a name with a beloved cop show.

Especially since, as was previously stated, the franchise will continue on in some form on CBS. David Stapf, the President of CBS Studios, told Deadline that they do not have any specific plans in place, as they want to take their time developing a quality spinoff.
