It’s been over a year since Kevin Costner shocked fans by departing Yellowstone, the wildly popular Western drama created by Taylor Sheridan. The two-time Oscar winner, best known for Dances With Wolves and Field of Dreams, exited the series amid reported creative tensions with Sheridan and a growing focus on his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga.

Despite his absence, the show’s first episode without Costner drew record-breaking viewership — though the star himself admitted he wasn’t even aware it had aired. Once hailed as a dream collaboration, the split between Costner and the series appears to have been far from friendly.

In a recent interview, Costner offered his most candid explanation yet for stepping away from the show’s final episodes:

“I’m willing to do anything where I feel like what I’m doing is for myself,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be a Western, it could be something else. But when something is no longer interesting to me, or there’s some other reason that I need to move on, I’m willing to do that.”

“You can write a short story or make a short film and it can live forever. It’s about how you tell it and whether people can relate to it.
