Summer Newman is Young and the Restless royalty. As the daughter of Nick Newman and Phyllis Summers, she is a legacy character who, frankly, shouldn’t be off-screen. For the last few months, she has been in Italy running Marchetti and anything that she has experienced has happened off-screen. However, there is hope that Summer will return to Genoa City sooner rathe than later.

The Crazy Life of Summer Newman

Love doesn’t come easy for Summer Newman (Allison Lanier), especially when it involves star-crossed lover and heir to the Abbott empire, Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor). The two were married and divorced twice.

During their second go-around, things took a turn for the couple when Tara Locke (Elizabeth Leiner) arrived in Genoa City with her son, Harrison (Redding Munsell). It was revealed that Kyle was the little boy’s father, which complicated things between Summer and him. At one point, Tara (and Courtney Hope’s Sally) manipulated Summer to leave town. Ultimately, Kyle and Summer reunited and remarried in Italy. Together they raised Harrison and Summer legally adopted the boy, effectively becoming his mother.

When the couple returned stateside, Summer and Kyle were dealt another blow. Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) returned from the dead, which riled up Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), putting Summer squarely in the middle. When Phyllis faked her death to frame Diane, Summer was devastated. It also spelled massive trouble for Kyle and Summer.

Their marriage couldn’t withstand Phyllis faking her death among other things. Kyle believed Summer knew her mother was alive, and Summer couldn’t deal with his total devotion to Diane. Enter his fling with Audra (Zuleyka Silver), which sealed the ending of their marriage.

Issues later arose between Summer and Claire (Hayley Erin) over the latter’s bond with Harrison. She felt threatened by her cousin and that Kyle was too accommodating to Claire.

After her marriage ended, Summer eventually tested the waters with Chance (Conner Floyd). The relationship ultimately fizzled after her brother Daniel’s (Michael Graziadei) wife, Heather (Vail Bloom), was murdered.

Where did Summer go?

In May 2025, Allison Lanier exited the Summer Newman role, coinciding with the end of her three-year contract.

There was no big send-off or life-changing moment that sent Summer away from Genoa City, but there was a corporate crisis. After both Sally and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) left Marchetti and took jobs with Billy (Jason Thompson) and Adam (Mark Grossman, respectively, Summer decided to make a move.

She returned to Italy where she could regroup and run things from there. Most recently, Harrison spent the summer with her while Kyle was in France, navigating mazes and Audra Charles at Aristotle Dumas’ coming out party, when the billionaire businessman announced he was Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn).

Summer’s exit was disappointing to say the least, but the show left the door open for another comeback. If Summer pops back up in Genoa City, it’s unclear as to whether Lanier would continue to play her.
