The Yellowstone universe is stepping into uncharted territory as it prepares for major creative shift without the direct writing hand of Taylor Sheridan.
Y: Marshals, the much-awaited spin-off from the Yellowstone universe, is gearing up for a spring 2026 debut on CBS. And it will mark the first time a Yellowstone series reportedly moves forward without Taylor Sheridan; he won’t be in the driver’s seat as lead writer or showrunner.
After the close of Yellowstone’s fifth season last year, fans hoped for fresh stories centered on the Dutton family. Instead, they got a surprise: two spin-offs in the pipeline.
One, tentatively titled Dutton Ranch, follows Rip and Beth on Paramount Network this fall; the other, Y: Marshals, shifts focus to Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes.
Despite Sheridan’s continued executive producer role, Y: Marshals will be driven creatively by new forces. We learned from Deadline that Spencer Hudnut, known for CBS’s SEAL Team, serves as showrunner and writer.
This shift in leadership brings questions about how the tone and storytelling will differ. CBS President Amy Reisenbach acknowledged Sheridan’s busy schedule but expressed confidence in the new team:
He’s a very busy guy, so we’ll take what we can get.
With Sheridan’s reduced involvement, Y: Marshals will test whether the franchise can maintain its gripping appeal while carving a fresh path.

Luke Grimes’ return as Kayce Dutton in Y: Marshals was not a foregone conclusion. The actor admitted that when Yellowstone wrapped, he believed Kayce’s story had reached its natural conclusion (via PEOPLE):
On the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce. It was over to me.
The end of the fifth season gave Kayce a peaceful resolution, having sold the Dutton land and seemingly found his soul’s rest.
But when the idea for Y: Marshals surfaced months later, Grimes was intrigued by the promise of a fresh, gripping narrative. He wanted a story that would “rope the audience in” and provide more than a quiet, happy ending.
If it was just like, ‘he’s happy,’ we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool.
The new series will explore Kayce’s role as a U.S. Marshal, where he must navigate the demands of law enforcement while wrestling with the emotional costs of serving on the front lines of Montana’s fight against violence. Grimes also hinted that his spinoff may challenge Kayce in ways that put his family dynamics under pressure, although the specifics remain under wraps.
It will be weird. There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels.
With Y: Marshals ready to premiere in spring 2026, the Yellowstone universe embarks on a new, uncertain journey without its original creative captain fully at the helm. Will this new frontier for Kayce Dutton deliver the gripping storytelling fans crave, or will the absence of Taylor Sheridan’s direct voice leave viewers longing for the past?
