Young and the Restless: Ashley Abbott’s Dire Diagnosis CONFIRMED – Who’s in Her Head?

Hello and welcome to Soap Dirt, the latest in television entertainment news. Hey Y&R fans, Belinda from Soap Dirt here, and I want to talk about Ashley Abbott and the literal just crazy things going on with her right now. She is in a mental health spiral, and we now have an official diagnosis confirmed by actress Eileen Davidson, although her character hasn’t seen a doctor to diagnose her, but we know what it is. Let’s unpack and talk about what it means, but please subscribe first if you have not already.

So apparently they’ve been planning this mental health crisis as a slow burn for quite a while, way back to when Ashley and Tucker went on their Paris honeymoon. Eileen Davidson mentioned she and head writer showrunner Josh Griffith talked about kind of doing an homage back to her mental health issues in the 80s when she had a couple of nervous breakdowns, and this time things seem to be so much worse. Eileen said that they kind of approached this to do it in a more subtle way, especially in the beginning.

She said because Ashley and her alter personalities didn’t want to tip anybody off that there was other things going on in her head, other people living up there rent-free. And as time went on, each of the alter egos started becoming more assertive. But Eileen also said she wanted to handle this differently than the five separate roles she played over on Days of Our Lives. If you’ve not seen her over there on Days, it’s pretty fun. She was recast with Stacy Heidik though to take over those parts on Days of Our Lives.

You might remember Heidik playing nutty Patty Williams on Young the Restless years back. I really liked her, and she’s done a nice job as Eileen Davidson’s replacement on Days of Our Lives. There’s also a big difference in how these multiple personalities are playing out on Y&R versus these multiple characters on Days because on Days, they’re not alters in her head created by mental illness, but they are doppelgangers, and one of them is a dude, and you’re going to die over this picture if you’ve not seen it before.

So Eileen Davidson played quadruplets Sister Mary Moira Banks, Susan Banks, Penelope Kent, and their brother Thomas Banks, who’s this shady hitman dude. And she also played Kristen DiMera, that’s the fifth character who looks like them, kind of by happenstance I guess, but my favorite is to see Eileen playing Thomas with the hairy chest and everything. She is totally committed to the role, and in her last appearance as Thomas Banks on the digital spin-off Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem, she played Thomas. So she’s a woman, Eileen’s a woman playing Thomas, a man who was then crossdressing as a woman, and it was hilarious.

And they showed her in Spanx, she had like this push-up bra over the hairy chest, and then these Spanx, and it looked like they, and I can’t show it to you because it’s not appropriate, and I guess they got away with it because it’s on streaming, but it looked like they had shoved an eggplant down into the bottom of her Spanx to look like a very well-hung man in women’s underthings. So it was a lot of fun. And unlike the over-weirdness of those five characters that she played on the NBC soap Young the Restless, of course, wanted to be more lowkey because these people that we’re meeting on Y&R are all figments of Ashley Abbott’s mind that’s ravaged by this illness. She has these aren’t real-life people like the ones on Days. The official diagnosis that Eileen Davidson confirmed for Ashley Abbott when talking to TV Guide is dissociative identity disorder.

She said there are three alters, and she calls them Miss Abbot, another called Ash, and then another that’s revealed soon. She said she tries to behave differently with each of the alters, and she said that she can tell at a glance when looking at an episode which personality she’s embodying in that scene without even hearing them say it because she developed them so distinctly.

But she did say it’s very hard to flip between them and said it makes her head hurt because it takes so much concentration, especially when she has to change from one alter to another mid-scene and transition over. And she said that’s more challenging. Eileen also teased a big Abbott intervention coming soon for Ashley that is explosive. They tried it a few weeks back if you remember.
